Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who does OPERATION: Sack Lunch serve and are there any restrictions?

Osl is a meal and basic necessities provider for the homeless and poverty level children, women, and men who live in Seattle. There are no restrictions or requirements. We serve any one who comes through our line.

2. Why does OPERATION: Sack Lunch serve the homeless?

OPERATION: Sack Lunch has a core belief that we are all born with the basic right to adequate nutrition. Many of those who are homeless have no choice in their situation and those who have made unhappy choices are still able to correct their mistakes. We cannot tackle any of life's mountains if we are crippled by hunger.

3. What do you hope to accomplish with your presentations and outreach work with the greater community?

We strive to dispel the myths of homelessness, giving names, faces, and stories, to all those we serve. We hope to encourage pro active service in the community and be an advocate for those whose voices are seldom heard.

4. Who are the homeless and why don't they get jobs?

First, assuming that homeless people do not have jobs is one of the myths of homelessness. Many who live without shelter have full time jobs, earning minimum wage. In today's society minimum wage is totally inadequate to support a place to live, clothes, food, and not to mention children. Many of those who are homeless have mental or physical challenges or are ill, and are unable to work. Many are children and teenagers. Many are women who have been battered, abused, and frightened. Some have substance abuse issues and addictions, but no one believes that the first time they take a drug or a drink it may will lead to addiction. And yes, there are some that simply do not want to work.

5. What can I do to help OPERATION: Sack Lunch?

We are always looking for volunteers to help prepare the meals, pick up supplies, shop, serve and clean up. Schools can hold drive's for the supplies we need such as new white socks, back packs, peanut butter and jelly, bottled water, etc. Schools have also done spare change drives and events to help raise funds for OSL. Young children can color lunch sacks giving each meal a dash of color.

6. Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes. OPERATION: Sack Lunch is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.
